Measure one furniture candidate

Work from the intended room back to the candidate. Your output is a short measurement brief that preserves where each number came from and what still needs checking, rather than a yes-or-no delivery verdict.

Before step 1

Gather the source and your measuring tools

  • Keep the exact variant label and the page or message supplying its assembled dimensions.
  • Use a tape measure and a rough room sketch; record the original unit beside every measurement.
  • Identify the access space you need to preserve before choosing the free placement rectangle.

Workflow

Build the record in four passes

Make the scope visible at each pass. If you cannot finish a pass, keep its uncertainty in the output and avoid allowing the next calculation to hide it.

  1. 1. Mark the usable placement area

    Measure the rectangle you intend to make available. Note fixed obstacles, opening doors and furniture already present. Do not use full room dimensions when only a corner is available.

  2. 2. Read the assembled outer dimensions

    Identify width and depth for the exact selected version. Check whether handles, arms or projections are included. Record the original wording before copying numbers into the form.

  3. 3. Calculate and test the layout physically

    Enter values in one unit, compare both orientations and tape out the footprint if practical. Check moving parts and daily access separately; a numerical margin alone says nothing about comfort.

  4. 4. Prepare the route question

    List each doorway, landing and elevator on the proposed path. Add package dimensions and handling configuration if known. Send unresolved route questions to the relevant team rather than filling them with assumptions.

Worked example: an illustrative cabinet

Suppose a measured free rectangle is 140 cm wide and 80 cm deep. An illustrative assembled cabinet is 120 cm wide and 45 cm deep. The normal orientation leaves 20 cm total unused width and 35 cm total unused depth.

Rotating that footprint changes the comparison to 45 cm by 120 cm. The width margin becomes 95 cm, but the depth margin becomes negative 40 cm. The rotated footprint therefore extends beyond the selected rectangle even though one axis has plenty of spare space.

These are invented teaching measurements, not a product listing or a delivery result. If a drawer opens beyond the 45 cm footprint, its movement still needs a separate check. A carton for the same cabinet could also have different dimensions.

  • Write the formula beside your record: available width minus item width; available depth minus item depth.

Supporting guidance

Finish with a question someone can answer

A useful handoff names the candidate, the measurement state, the source and the unresolved obstacle. Instead of asking whether it will fit, describe the particular opening or turn and attach the dimensions you actually measured.

Example request: “For the selected cabinet configuration, please confirm the packed dimensions and number of packages. My route includes a landing; I have attached its sketch and clearance measurements. Which handling configuration should be assessed?” This requests information without assuming the service includes assembly or unpacking.

  • Save source URL, option, assembled size, original unit, free rectangle, calculated margins and check date.
  • Keep package count, package sizes and route assessment pending until the relevant source confirms them.

Keep an auditable measurement note

Someone reviewing your note should be able to distinguish a measured room value, a seller-supplied dimension and an unresolved question without reconstructing your browsing session.
